Oysters and Ocean Acidification Curriculum Overview (6th-8th Grade)
Many of our rivers and streams empty into the inlets of South Puget Sound. Actions in the watershed also impact water quality in the Sound, including shellfish harvest. Field trips take students to Puget Sound shorelines, such as the Meyer’s Point Environmental Field Station, Tolmie State Park, Zittel’s Marina, Boston Harbor Marina, and Burfoot Park. Students learn about all aspects of the nearshore environment, including the significance of local oyster populations, the presence of intertidal wildlife, and the importance of nearby forests and wetlands.
Currently, nearshore programming is offered to specific grade levels within Olympia School District and North Thurston Public Schools. If you are interested in participating in nearshore programming outside of our normal districts and grade levels, please reach out to Sam Nadell at snadell@thurstoncd.com.
